Summary: Very durable and lots of fun
Comment: I gave this to my 23 month old and she loves it. She loves to push all the buttons to make it go either forwards or backwards. She can play with it either on or off and likes to just push it too. She has thrown it quite a few times and it holds up and takes a beating just fine. It works great with her current Thomas set.

Summary: 4 or 6 Wheel Drive Needed at this Pricepoint
Comment: Not to be derivative, but Mr. Jensen's review highlights the key weakness(es) of this engine, price and number of drive wheels. It REALLY DOES need 4 or 6 wheel drive to handle the hills in any interesting track layout [given the $29.99 price]! That being said, I WILL respectfully disagree with another reviewer by noting that our red engine has taken 1.5 years of ABUSE and has continued functioning with aplomb! Ours was able to handle the Magic Mountain layout until recently. It is thus due, mostly, to hard play that I wish this engine had 4 or 6 wheel drive, as it might still be mountain-capable at this time...In sum, our son has had a blast with this engine for 18 mos. I just wish it had the capabilities it did, out-of-box, due to the price. But given that Brio is Euro-superior and thus less subject to market forces than it might be at Wal-Mart, one dare not hold one's breath for such a product improvement. Ta. Dr. L.

Summary: the think I cant train
Comment: I left a review of this toy over two years ago and have not been able to find it. I personally loved the appearance of the train but found out shortly that looks can be deceiving. We had gotten it for our two year old son at the time. It was purchased along with the Thomas the Tank Engine (TTE)battery operated trains. They still to this day work .. and work well. as for this train it was so not worth the money. Within the first two weeks this train was no longer able to make it up the hill to my sons train set (TTE)We initially thought that it might have been the battery .. so we changed it.. When we did it was successful but it began to run out of steam..;-) At that point it was inevitable. It was no longer going up the hill. Shortly after that. About two months total the train stopped moving all together. Although the sound is some what audible at this time it has not lasted near as well as the TTE trains.. buy it only if you can tolerate that this is a train doomed to fail

Summary: buy the yellow or green engine!!!
Comment: I bought two red locomotives (not at the same time) because I thought that two batteries would be better than one. Wrong. The yellow engine has been the longest functioning. The green one broke down but I suppose this can happen to any toy. The red locomotives are too long, too heavy to go up steep slopes, they often slip. The screw is too far deep and I always think this is the last time I will be able to unscrew it! Buy the engines instead!

Summary: Great locomotive
Comment: I do not know why so many of the other reviewers have problems with this locomotive. Maybe they got an early version or something. I received mine yesterday and it runs just fine up and down hills, in and out of curves as well as with and without wagons (I have been testing it with up to six wagons without problems even on hills). The locomotive is much stronger and faster than the smaller battery driven engines. It is also easier to control than these engines as the control buttons are larger. It may be used as a traditional hand-pushed locomotive by switching the last button (this is also a feature not found on the smaller engines). And finally it generates sound whenever it starts moving (the sound last for about 5 seconds and then it shuts up).
So, all in all, this locomotive has been a great investment. Check it out if you are running a battery powered Brio railway.

Here you have it: the little engine that could. It's a fiery red choo-choo with shining wheels and glossy black trim--a locomotive that will get even the most stubborn loads up and over that hill in time for breakfast. It can haul as many as eight (or more) full-size cars. And it's packed with features, too: flip the power switch, push the yellow button on the front, and it roars into action--whistle blowing, engine chugging, double front headlamp lighting up the track. Another button sends it into reverse--"Clang! Clang!" warns the bell, and the engine begins chugging backward, a flashing red rear light warning off unwary bystanders. A third button stops the engine instantly--even when it's running full speed ahead. It's simple enough for even a very young railway worker to operate easily (our 4-year-old test driver figured it out first), and if it doesn't get into the action after about five minutes, it shuts off automatically. The battery compartment hidden in the smokestack requires a small screwdriver for access. The locomotive requires two AAA batteries (not included). --Julie Ubben
