Customer Rating: Summary: Great toy, a little high maintenance Comment: I got this train for my son, who's 33 months, and he loves it. It's one of the few things he will do to entertain himself so we can get some things done, so well worth the $140! It has some design issues, though, which is why I give it 4 stars.
My son is about 34 inches tall and 28 pounds and the train seems to be the perfect size for him. His friends who are 4" or so taller can ride but seem kind of cramped. I think a kid several inches shorter would enjoy it, too. I thought it was easy to assemble (and came mostly pre-assembled). I don't think it's the greatest quality - the plastic on the front (the "cab" and the round tube part in front, is that the "boiler"?) is thin and not very durable. I'm not sure this would last long with a large or particularly destructive kid.
The train is loud - it has train noises that are activated by a button (choo-choo and chuga chuga) that are pretty loud, and play for a long time when you push the button. The engine itself is also loud - it sounds kind of like a hair dryer but not that loud. With the engine on, you can barely hear the train sounds, so they're not as fun as they'd be otherwise. You can talk with other people in the same room with the train on (though you have to raise your voice a bit), but it's difficult to talk on the phone in the same room.
The train does tip over and onto the child if set up on carpet. Our son wouldn't ride it after it tipped a couple of times, so we moved it onto the hardwood floor and he and it were fine. He's not an unusually timid kid (though certainly not a daredevil), so I think a lot of kids would be freaked out by this. I'd be reluctant to buy it if I didn't have wood floors. A couple of his more timid friends were even scared when the train derailed (a much less catasrophic failure where the train lurches off the tracks but does not overturn), which happens sometimes even on the hardwood floor. I think tipover can be avoided by teaching the child to lean in on the turns, but our son is too young to understand (or remember) that.
The train does get stuck sometimes, especially if set up on carpet or if the tracks are set up in a shape other than the shape they're designed for. The problem is that only 1 of the wheels gets engine power, so if that wheel doesn't have good contact with the track, it just spins. We had to push our son quite a few times but have now taught him to rock forward and backward to get himself unstuck. At least getting stuck didn't upset him, it just required us to go push him.
I definitely recommend buying the extension track set - even with the extension, the track isn't all that long. Watching your kid on it is kind of like watching a hamster in its little wheel. Without the extension, I think I'd go crazy watching it. That said, and to be a little contradictory, the track takes up a lot of room, if you don't have a big house (or don't like having large parts of your house dominated by train tracks), you might measure before getting it because you need one large room or 2 connected rooms with a wide door to set up the track in the figure 8.
The track is a toe-stub trap. It's just low enough that you don't notice it but high enough to catch your foot, and it's got lots of corners. If your house isn't big enough to have the track completely out of traffic, you'll definitely end up swearing at the track on more than one occasion.
Customer Rating: Summary: Disappointed Comment: The front wheel doesn't spin smoothly. I've oiled everything that can be oiled and now it works somewhat decently but the tracks are all oily looking now. It doesn't ride smoothly. It's jerky and get's stuck on curved sections of track. Don't waste your money. It also looks very cheap. The pictures are way cooler looking.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good for the price Comment: My son loves to ride this train which makes it worth the trouble. It is a little high maintenance in the sense that it needs to be charged whenever it is not in use but cannot be charged for more than 30 hrs. It comes with a warning saying that not doing so can void warranty on the battery. And it needs to be charged for 16 hrs before initial use.
Also, there is no on/off switch so the child needs to hold down the button to make it go. Overall, it is a good toy, you can't ask too much considering the price.
Customer Rating: Summary: choo choo! Comment: My 11 month old received this for xmas. He was a little scared of it at first but loves it now. I think riding around in a circle is a bit boring but he thinks it's great and loves that he can control it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Be careful - It will derail. Comment: Ordered this (sort of late) for my 16 month old grandson for Christmas. The seller pulled through and it arrived on time (with a few days to spare). At first my grandson loved it....then it derailed and he fell off and it scared him. He wouldn't get back on it for 3 days, but after a little coaxing, we managed to get him to give it another try. He loves it!! I'm afraid my daughter is going to unhook the horn, though. It drives her crazy. Be sure and keep everything out of the way of the tracks....his dog was laying on the tracks and he almost ran over her (she yelped away...to safety).
